Gold for S'pore in artistic singles

Singapore's Muhammad Iqbal Abdul Rahman (right) shows poise and control on the way to winning the male artistic singles final in the inaugural Pre-Junior International Pencak Silat Championship at the Bedok Sports Hall yesterday.

Brunei's Adi Fakhri Mahfuz and Malaysia's Abdul Bals Ramli finished second and third.

The competition, for athletes aged 12-14, is being staged alongside the 2nd World Junior Championship and the Singapore Open. It ends tomorrow.

Singapore athletes have collected nine golds and eight silvers, including three medals from the junior events and five from the pre-juniors of the Open.

Chief coach Mohammad Hidayat Hosni said: 'I'm especially happy with the pre-junior squad's contribution. It shows our development programme is bearing fruit.'
